Technical merit
- Before considering the content of a photograph, we look for the basics - exposure and focus. Proper exposure usually means that there is still a hint of detail in the darkest shadows and all but the brightest highlights as well as good content in the middle tones. Photos where the subject is too dark or too washed out lack interest. Blur in photos sometimes adds an artistic edge but it must be used skillfully to be effective.
Composition
- Good composition is often subjective but basically means that the photo is interesting and balanced while avoiding distractions. Otherwise great photos can be spoiled by items in the background that draw the eye away from the main subject. Lines and shapes in the photo that cause the eye to be "drawn" into the photo and towards the subject make for excellent composition.
Subject matter
- The winning photograph in a particular category will reflect the intent of the category. For example, photos entered in the "Labs Working" category should illustrate what these dogs do best - retrieve. Action brings the subject to life and a photo that captures the action engages the viewer.

Pet Portrait Days
We work with veterinarians, pet food retailers, doggy daycare operators, obedience clubs and other training facilities, rescue organizations, and many other businesses and groups to organize Pet Portrait Days.
Our partners have used the occasion to raise funds for charities such as the Farley Fund, to enhance their client relationships, as a fun day for their club or as a revenue generator. If you would like to host a Pet Portrait Day, please give us a call to discuss it in more detail.
