Ways To Enjoy Your Labrador Retriever

Once you have your Labrador, there are many fields of interest for you and you Lab. The three main ones are: Conformation, Obedience and Field.

  •   Conformation: Once in the show ring the judge will examine your dog while posed. You will be asked to move your dog in various patterns. The judge will determine your dog's soundness and breed type as compared to the other dogs in the ring. The ultimate goal in showing is a Conformation Championship (Ch).

  •   Obedience: A Lab's intelligence, trainability and eagerness to please make them a pleasure to work with in obedience. Obedience classes are fun and an easy way to train and at the same time build a lifelong bond between owner and dog. There are three levels of obedience and the aim is an Obedience Trial Championship.

  •   Field: The function of a retriever is to seek and retrieve "fallen game" when ordered to do so. In field, there are Licensed Field Trials, Working Certificate Tests and Hunt Tests. Judges will test the dogs for their natural abilities, including their memory, sagacity, intelligence, attention, nose, courage, perseverance and style and their abilities acquired through training, including steadiness, control, response to direction and delivery. A Field Trial Champion is a very difficult stage to achieve. The three levels of Working Certificate, W.C., W.C.I. and W.C.X. are a little less time consuming. The three levels of Hunt Tests are Jr. Hunter, Sr. Hunter and Master Hunter.

There are other things you can do with your Lab, such as Agility, Flyball, Tracking, Rally-O etc.
